What happened
Durham police say two men were shot Friday night on a GoDurham bus near North Roxboro and Edwards streets.
Officers were called around 10:20 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, WRAL reported, citing the department. They found men with gunshot wounds. Both are being treated. Police have not said how badly the men are hurt, and they have not identified or arrested anyone.
CBS 17's headline on the same incident also attributed the report to Durham police: two people hurt in a GoDurham bus shooting on North Roxboro Street.
According to police, the shots were fired during an altercation. That is their account of what happened. They have not said who was in the fight, how it started, or who fired.
What police have released

- It was a shooting on a GoDurham bus at North Roxboro and Edwards streets.
- Officers found men with gunshot wounds.
- Both men are being treated.
- In their first look at the scene, officers said the gunfire happened during an altercation.
- The severity of the injuries is unknown.
- No suspect has been identified or arrested.
We are using the street names police gave. We are not adding a house number.
We have not found a news release on the City of Durham's police alerts page or a rider notice on GoDurham's site. Until the department posts its own statement, we are relying on the police account as published by WRAL, with CBS 17's matching headline as a second local-television confirmation.
Police have not released the men's names. We are not naming them.
A separate case on Sept. 21
Friday night was not the first time this fall that Durham police have described gunfire involving a GoDurham bus.
On Monday, Sept. 21, Chief Stephanie Mardis said officers responded around 4:25 p.m. to a GoDurham bus in the 4000 block of Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard for a reported attempted larceny, WRAL reported. In the department's account, a juvenile pulled out a gun during a scuffle and fired two shots. No one was hit. Officers took the gun and took the juvenile into custody.
CBS 17 published a department statement on that call. It said no officer fired a weapon and that there was no ongoing threat to the public. It also said one officer had a minor injury and was taken to a hospital.
WRAL, citing Mardis, said the officer's injury was to his hand. ABC11 later quoted a Tuesday statement from Mardis saying she was thankful no one was seriously injured. ABC11's first-day story said no injuries were reported and did not say the call was on a GoDurham bus. We are using the chief's account, as reported by WRAL and in her Tuesday statement, and we are not treating ABC11's "no injuries" line as the last word.
That Sept. 21 case is a separate investigation. Officials have not said it is connected to Friday night. About 18 days passed between the two calls. Calling Friday "the second time in three weeks that shots were fired on a GoDurham bus" skips those differences: Sept. 21 was a scuffle with officers during a larceny call, and no one was hit by the gunfire.
We are not naming the juvenile.

Why it matters
A shooting on a city bus at a downtown Durham intersection is a public-safety question for riders, drivers and people who live nearby. Neighbors need a clear account of what police have confirmed, what they have not released, and that Triangle Local is not an emergency service.
