What happened
Carolina Panthers receiver Tetairoa McMillan has been named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week after a record-setting night in a 32-26 win over the Detroit Lions.
McMillan caught 14 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns in the Sunday Night Football game on Oct. 4 in Charlotte. The team announced the honor Wednesday and says he is the first wide receiver in Panthers history to win it.
A night for the record books
According to the team, McMillan:
- Became the first player in Panthers history with at least 10 catches, 175 receiving yards and two touchdowns in a game
- Tied for the second-most catches in a game in team history. Only Christian McCaffrey, with 15 in 2019, has had more
- Tied Muhsin Muhammad for the team's second-most receiving yards in a game, behind Steve Smith's 201 in 2005
- Had nine catches for 147 yards in the first half alone, the most first-half catches in team history
At 23 years and 182 days old, he is also the youngest player in NFL history to put up at least 14 catches, two touchdowns and 190 receiving yards in one game, the team said. McMillan was the Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year last season.
"A couple of Southern California guys, the lights will never be too bright for those two," coach Dave Canales said of McMillan and quarterback Bryce Young after the game.
Young and Hubbard
Young completed 29 of 41 passes for 329 yards, threw two touchdown passes and had no interceptions. It was his fifth career 300-yard game and his second this season. He has nine touchdown passes through four games, the most by a Panthers quarterback at this point of a season, according to the team.
Running back Chuba Hubbard had season highs of 20 carries and 122 rushing yards, and scored twice on the ground. That moved him to 3,992 career rushing yards, past McCaffrey and into fourth place on the team's all-time list.
The Panthers have scored 121 points in their first four games, the most in franchise history at this point of a season.
The season so far
Carolina is 2-2. It lost its opener to Chicago 59-37, won 34-3 at Atlanta, lost 21-18 at Cleveland and then beat Detroit.
What's next
The Panthers have a bye this weekend. They return Sunday, Oct. 18, at the Philadelphia Eagles, at 1 p.m. on CBS. Their next game after that is against Tampa Bay on Sunday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m.
Why it matters
The Panthers are North Carolina's NFL team and have a large following in the Triangle. With a bye this weekend, their next game is the Oct. 18 trip to Philadelphia, on CBS.
