What happened
In Sanford, Pfizer has told workers it is cutting jobs at its manufacturing plant, ABC11 reported Wednesday. The Triangle Business Journal, writing Tuesday, named the same Lee County site.
Neither account gave a number, a date or a list of departments. Pfizer's written comment to ABC11 said the company had run efficiency reviews and that "headcount reductions are a part of this initiative." It also said it would keep colleagues informed and offer support services.
A company spokesperson, writing separately to BioSpace on Tuesday, confirmed manufacturing cuts and would not name sites, counts or dates.
Pfizer's own Sanford page describes a 230-acre plant that makes vaccine intermediates and drug substance, plus gene-therapy drug substance and drug product. That page does not discuss this week's cuts.
ABC11 and the business journal also named Pfizer's Rocky Mount site, in Nash County. This page is about Sanford.
Large layoffs often appear on the state's Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification list. A Wednesday evening check of the 2026 summary found no Pfizer row. The newest notice there is dated Oct. 15. ABC11 reported the same gap Wednesday afternoon.
This site is not Pfizer or the commerce department. For the plant description, use the company's Sanford page. For later filings, use the state's WARN list.
