What happened

In Greenville, Pitt County commissioners voted Monday night, Oct. 19, to put a proposed pause on new data centers onto the calendar for public hearing.

WITN reported the vote was unanimous and that the hearing is Nov. 16. WCTI, covering the same meeting, also reported a unanimous vote after staff presented options for a temporary pause.

The posted agenda for the 6 p.m. session in the Eugene James Auditorium asked the board, with Planning Director Jonas Hill, to assess data-center regulatory gaps and to set a hearing date for a pause. That item is a process step, not an adopted ordinance.

What Monday did not do

No ban is in effect on the basis of Monday's vote. The packet we read did not include the text of a draft.

WCTI described the idea under discussion as a one-year pause and said a final vote is expected Nov. 16. WITN described a temporary moratorium and a hearing that night. Until Pitt County posts the notice, Nov. 16 is not treated here as a finished ordinance.

The manager's report lists regular meetings at 6 p.m. Nov. 2 and Nov. 16 in the same auditorium.

What this account leaves out

Both stations said residents spoke in favor of a halt. Their names and wording did not match, and no county transcript was posted, so those remarks are omitted.

WITN also summarized Hill's remarks on water, power, noise and facility size. Those details appear in that report only, so they stay out until a second independent source or a county document states them.

Why it matters

Pitt County has not banned data centers. Monday's vote, as reported by WITN and WCTI, puts a proposed temporary pause on a November calendar. People who want to speak need the county's own meeting notice, not a copied account of the Monday discussion.
