What happened
In Cary, the Wake County Board of Education is scheduled Tuesday, Oct. 20, to look at staff changes to the 2027-28 student assignment draft and then hear from the public.
The district calendar puts a work session at 2:15 p.m. at Crossroads I, 5625 Dillard Drive, and the regular meeting at 5:30 p.m. in the board room there. Neither session is a final vote.
What is on the agenda
NC govwatch's listing of the work session includes "Feedback Review and Revised Draft, 2027-2028 WCPSS School Enrollment Plan." The evening agenda includes a public hearing on that same plan.
An Oct. 14 district newsletter said staff would bring any changes based on comments on the first draft. It said the board is expected to vote on a final version Nov. 17.
The 2027-28 enrollment page, still labeled as the initial draft, says that version went out Sept. 3. WCPSS names the new Morrisville High School as the main reason for this cycle, along with crowding, unused seats, calendar choices and keeping groups of students together.
What the posted draft says
Families can type an address on the district page to see a proposed school for 2027-28. The page says some students may apply to remain where they are as a stability transfer, without a district bus.
ThoughtExchange on an updated draft is listed from today through Nov. 4. A Google Meet overview is listed for Oct. 29 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Until WCPSS posts the revised maps, school-by-school moves stay off this page. WRAL reported counts for the September version; those figures are not on the pages we checked, so they stay out.
How to speak or watch
The district's school board page has the link to sign up for public comment. WRAL reported that the form runs from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on meeting day, and that people who mark the assignment plan will be called during the hearing.

Why it matters
Tuesday is the first time the board is set to see staff changes to the 2027-28 assignment draft and hear from the public in a formal hearing. The plan is not final until the Nov. 17 vote. Families need the district's own calendar, the address lookup, and the difference between a hearing and a decision.
