What happened
In Orange County, Carrboro's Town Commons play area at 301 West Main Street is open again after a renovation, The Daily Tar Heel reported Monday.
The newspaper, writing Oct. 26, put the cost at $277,000, said work began in August, and said the town held a grand opening earlier this month. A Daily Tar Heel photo caption dated the ribbon-cutting Friday, Oct. 16.
Town Manager Patrice Toney told the paper the old equipment had drainage problems and that the surfacing was coming up. She said the town paid for the work with capital-improvement money in the 2026-27 budget and that fixing drainage was the largest expense. Accessibility was another priority, she said: most of the old gear did not allow wheelchairs, and the new layout includes sensory and musical elements, an ADA-accessible spinner that can take a wheelchair, and a wider entrance.
The Daily Tar Heel wrote that the new equipment uses Carrboro's purple and green and is themed around the Carrboro Farmers' Market, which sets up at Town Commons on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
A July 17 town news flash had already said the play structure would come down so crews could fix surfacing and drainage and add ADA-accessible equipment, with a Carrboro theme, for ages 2 to 12. That July notice said the closure would last until September. The newspaper's later account puts construction in August and the opening in mid-October. This file does not treat September as the reopen date.
The town's Town Commons page still lists play equipment at the 1.7-acre park beside Town Hall. It does not give the $277,000 figure or the October ceremony date.

What we don't know yet
We have not found a later town news flash that states the $277,000 cost or the Oct. 16 ceremony in the town's own words.

Why it matters
Carrboro spent capital-improvement money to rebuild the Town Commons play area after drainage and accessibility problems. Families who use the park next to Town Hall need the cost, what changed, and that the July "until September" line does not match the October opening in the newspaper account.
