What happened
In Oxford, a federal judge sentenced Shamar Wayquis Evans, 35, to eight years in prison for a gun count and a crack count, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina said Wednesday.
CBS 17, posted Friday morning, independently used his name, Oxford, and that eight-year length. Its opening sentence also called the term "nearly a decade." This file keeps the eight-year figure the office printed.
WCTI12, posted Thursday, independently named him and wrote eight years. That station and CBS 17 are both Nexstar, so they are not treated here as two newsrooms.
What the office posted
The Wednesday release said he pleaded guilty on June 16, 2026, to possessing a gun as a convicted felon and to possession with intent to sell crack. U.S. District Judge Louise W. Flanagan imposed the term. The page lists Case No. 5:25CR00238FL-1. It also prints the name "sly dollar."
It said ATF and Oxford police investigated him and made multiple controlled purchases of crack. On January 3, 2025, officers executed search warrants at two residences connected to him. At the first, they found a firearm and drug paraphernalia in a bedroom. At the second, they found him with 14 grams of crack inside his jacket.
CBS 17 carried the two-house search and that jacket weight. That page omitted the January 3 date. The station added that investigators looked at him in 2025 and that he was taken into custody last year. Those two phrases are not on the official release.
WCTI12 carried the two residences and the same 14-gram figure. It omitted the controlled purchases, that January date, and the judge's name.
Prior convictions
The office listed a North Carolina conviction for assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, a 2017 heroin-sale count, and another heroin-sale count in 2018. CBS 17 used those years. WCTI12 listed the assault and heroin counts without the years.
What we don't know yet
The pages we read do not give the sentence in months. They also do not say whether he will appeal.
The office page prints "From September 2025 through January 1, 2025" as an investigation window. That span cannot be read in order. This file does not repair it.
What happens next
He is to serve the term in the federal system. We will update this story if the court posts the exact months. This site is not that federal office or Oxford police. If anyone is in danger, call 911.

Why it matters
An Oxford man is going to federal prison after a guilty plea on a gun count and a crack count. Neighbors need the office's own term, a second account we can read, and that one station's "nearly a decade" line does not match eight years.
