What happened

In Pittsboro, TriRiver Water asked customers Friday to cut back after a contractor drilled into the pipe that feeds the town filtration plant.

The utility's 2:22 p.m. alert said the damage forced a temporary shutdown of that plant. Crews were still studying the break and had no repair clock.

Treated water already in tanks and mains is still flowing, the notice said. That stock may last several hours, depending on use.

The same page told households to keep taps for essential needs and to put off laundry, dishwashing, irrigation, and other heavy draws.

The Town of Pittsboro posted a matching emergency note at 3:30 p.m. and pointed readers to the utility page.

WRAL, posted later Friday, independently carried the shutdown, the stored-supply warning, and the request to conserve.

Chapelboro, at 4:47 p.m., placed the plant in Bynum near the Haw River. Town spokesperson Caitlin Murphy told that newsroom AT&T contractors caused the damage earlier in the day. The official notices say only "a utility company." WRAL used that unnamed wording.

Chapelboro also wrote that Murphy said AT&T crews were added to a Monday, Nov. 2, session already set for 7:30 a.m. outside Town Hall at 287 East Street, and that those crews were asked to stop work until then. Friday's utility and town notices do not mention that meeting.
