What happened

In Raleigh, city police on Sunday afternoon identified the man killed Saturday night while helping a driver on Interstate 540 as Trevor Gray, 24, according to WRAL and CBS 17.

Both outlets, writing from that account, reported that he died at the scene. WRAL placed the wreck near the Triangle Town Boulevard exit around 11 p.m. CBS 17 independently placed it around 10:50 p.m. on the westbound lanes near Exit 14, Falls of Neuse Road.

The two Sunday versions disagree about where that first vehicle sat. In WRAL's telling, Gray got out to help a driver who was already stopped in the median after a crash, a westbound driver then hit that car — which WRAL also described as on the side of the road — and the first car struck Gray. CBS 17's account said an investigation indicated a vehicle sat at an angle in the travel lanes with no lights after a single-vehicle wreck; Gray pulled onto the left shoulder and walked into those lanes to check on the driver still inside; and a second westbound vehicle hit the dark disabled car, which then struck Gray. We are not choosing one version.

CBS 17 added that he was found on the right shoulder afterward and that EMS said he died there.

The state's DriveNC board, when we read it early Sunday, listed westbound I-540 closed from Exit 17 to Exit 14 in Wake County because of a crash. That posting timed the shutdown from 11:11 p.m. Saturday and showed a 12:19 a.m. Sunday update. WRAL reported those westbound lanes still closed as of midnight.

CBS 17, citing NCDOT, later wrote that both directions were first shut at Triangle Town Boulevard; that eastbound traffic reopened soon after; and that westbound lanes were open again by 2 a.m. A later load of the same DriveNC event address returned "item not found." We have not read a written NCDOT clearance of our own.

The department, CBS 17 wrote, said no one has been charged. WRAL reported the same.

What we don't know yet

WRAL's median and roadside lines and CBS 17's middle-of-the-highway, no-lights line do not agree. Officials have not said whether the second driver stayed or if charges will come later. No written NCDOT reopen notice was on the DriveNC event page when we checked.

What happens next

We will update this story if Raleigh police post their own account, settle those conflicting details, or announce charges.
