Raleigh: NC State relieves Dave Doeren of football coaching duties

Athletics director Boo Corrigan said Saturday the coach is out immediately. Todd Goebbel will lead the rest of the season. A national search starts now.

What happened

In Raleigh, NC State ended Dave Doeren's run as football coach on Saturday.

Athletics director Boo Corrigan posted the decision at 4:37 p.m. The campus note said the change was effective at once.

"I want to thank Coach Doeren for his service and contributions to NC State, and for always representing the university with pride," Corrigan said in that statement. "I appreciate his leadership during his 14-year tenure and the passion he brought to this role. We wish Dave, Sara and his family the best in the future."

ABC11 and WRAL both carried the same campus note Saturday.

Todd Goebbel, the running backs coach and special teams coordinator, will finish the year as the interim coach. The university said he joined the staff in 2019.

Campus officials said they will open a nationwide search for the next coach right away.

The move came after Stanford won 31-28 on Friday at Stanford Stadium. The live schedule lists the Wolfpack at 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the ACC.

Still ahead are California on Oct. 31 at Carter-Finley Stadium for Homecoming, Duke on Nov. 7, Syracuse on Nov. 14, Florida State on Nov. 21 in Tallahassee, and North Carolina on Nov. 28 in Chapel Hill. Saturday evening, that schedule page listed Oct. 31 without a kickoff time.

Why it matters
