What happened

In Sanford, the city and Brick Capital Community Development Corporation have set a public groundbreaking for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, for a Washington Avenue housing project called W.T. Wilson Ridge.

A city notice posted Oct. 20 puts the ceremony at 1410 Boykin Avenue and says anyone may attend. The Sanford Herald reported the same hour and street on Thursday.

The first phase, according to that notice, is a 16-unit apartment building for permanent supportive housing and 12 houses, with 36 more houses planned later. Thursday's newspaper account called the finished work 48 houses plus the apartment building, which matches the 12-and-36 split.

Brick Capital is to keep the land under a community land trust, the notice says, so a buyer pays for the house. If that owner sells, they keep part of any gain and the next qualified buyer gets the home at an affordable price.

For streets and utilities, the city listed $850,000 in American Rescue Plan Act money, an $850,000 match from Lee County and $450,000 from Brick Capital. A $950,000 Community Development Block Grant, which the Herald also reported, is listed for utilities, streets, curb and gutter, and flood and drainage work.

Mayor Rebecca Wyhof Salmon, quoted in the notice, said expanding affordable housing is a City Council priority. Kerry Bashaw, Brick Capital's executive director, said the work is an opportunity for Lee County families.

The city named the subdivision for William T. "Bill" Wilson, a founding Brick Capital board member.

A city project list still shows a 16-unit Brick Capital apartment plan and a connected 48-lot subdivision at 0 Washington Avenue, north of West Garden Street.

What we don't know yet
