What happened

In Fayetteville, the city is moving ahead with an elevator at the downtown garage next to Segra Stadium, according to a statement it gave ABC11.

CBS 17 independently wrote that leaders are taking bids for that work at the five-story public garage.

ABC11 said council voted Monday. CBS 17 reported the vote without naming the weekday.

Bids are due Nov. 24, both stations wrote. CBS 17 added that City Manager Doug Hewett's staff will bring the submissions and a recommendation back to council.

The city told ABC11 that people heading to a Woodpeckers game, shopping downtown, or coming home to the Prince Charles should be able to get through the deck without a struggle, and that the elevator is meant for those who cannot use the stairs.

CBS 17 wrote that the garage opened in 2018 next to the ballpark and that the original developer never finished the elevator. ABC11 skipped that year. It did write that the deck and elevator were first scheduled for October 2024, and that the city sued the developers in July. Those two lines are absent from the CBS 17 account we read.

Both stations quoted Mayor Mitch Colvin on the stalled larger project. ABC11 said the city picked another builder last year for a hotel and high-rise, with a June 2026 groundbreaking that has not happened. CBS 17 said that about a year ago council voted to work with a replacement developer, and that in November 2025 the station was told construction would begin in summer 2026 and finish in 2028.

The stations disagree on how to spell a council member's name. ABC11 used Shawn McMillan. CBS 17 used Shaun McMillian. We are not choosing one.

ABC11 wrote that six handicapped spaces sit in front of the stadium and that four of them are across the street. CBS 17 did not print that count.

Neither page states the cost or the fund that will pay for the elevator. CBS 17 quoted Hewett saying the bids will show where the money is coming from.

What we don't know yet

The price. The funding source. A bid packet we can read. When work would start.

What happens next

Bids close Nov. 24. The city manager's staff is then to return to council. We will update this story if the city posts a cost.

Why it matters

A downtown garage next to the ballpark has no elevator. People who cannot use the stairs need the city's own statement, the bid deadline both stations printed, and that the cost is still unknown.
