What happened

In Lumberton, a second person has been charged in the Oct. 11 death of a 17-year-old, according to the Lumberton Police Department.

The Robesonian, writing from that account on Thursday, said a juvenile was charged Tuesday with second-degree murder and accessory after the fact to a felony. WMBF reported the same counts and dated the arrest Tuesday, Oct. 20.

About 6 p.m. that Tuesday, traffic and patrol officers received license-plate-reader alerts on a vehicle tied to the case, the newspaper reported. They stopped it and took the juvenile into custody without incident.

The department sent that person to Cumberland Regional Juvenile Detention Center. The newspaper said a first appearance was Wednesday and that the juvenile is now held with no bond. WMBF also reported a no-bond hold there.

A charge is an accusation. Both people charged are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. We are not naming the juvenile. The victim's name has not been released.

On Oct. 11 at about 5:46 p.m., a 911 call reported an ATV wreck on Gavintown Road near Rogers Street. Officers found a teenager badly hurt. Robeson County EMS and the Lumberton Fire Department gave aid. The teen later died at UNC Health Southeastern.

Further work found an apparent gunshot wound before the wreck, The Robesonian and WPDE reported from the department. WMBF used the plural "gunshot wounds."

On Oct. 12, officers arrested Cameron Isaiah Scott of Lumberton at the station and charged him with second-degree murder. The Robesonian, WPDE and WMBF all reported he was held at the county jail with no bond.

WPDE wrote that investigators have not said what led to the shooting. A check of the city's police page on Thursday found contact details and no matching public release.

North Carolina's murder statute, G.S. 14-17, sets out first-degree and second-degree murder. A jury has not decided either accusation.

What we don't know yet

The victim has not been identified. Investigators have not described what they say happened before the wreck, whether more people will be charged, or whether Scott or the juvenile has a lawyer. Scott's first-appearance result after Oct. 12 has not been posted in the accounts we can read.
