What happened

In Pittsboro, residents are scheduled to gather at 2 p.m. Wednesday to ask the state for a pause on data centers, according to WRAL and a public events listing.

The station said Haw River Assembly will join the session at the Community House and that organizers want a two-year statewide halt, pointing to water use and possible contamination of rivers. It also said more stops are planned later.

Clean Water for North Carolina's calendar puts the same Wednesday block at 2 to 4:30 p.m. Eastern at 65 Thompson Street and names that assembly as the organizer. The session has not been attended for this file.

What the county has already done

Chatham County's own page says commissioners adopted a temporary halt on data-center approvals on Feb. 11, 2026, so staff can study effects and write standards.

County Manager Bryan Thompson, in a statement WRAL published, said that one-year pause covers data centers, data-processing sites, and cryptocurrency mining in unincorporated areas, and that staff kept drafting rules even after a lawsuit.

WRAL added that the local pause runs through February 2027.

The court fight two outlets describe

WRAL said Eco TIP West plans a 750-megawatt project at Triangle Innovation Point West near Moncure, sued the county in April, and won a September ruling from Superior Court Judge John Morris.

A Sept. 29 Chatham Journal report described a Sept. 17 order by Judge John M. Morris that found the same company entitled to judgment and attorney fees, and said damages and the fee amount were left for later. That report also placed the plan at the same business park.

What we don't know yet

The 2 p.m. remarks are not in yet. It is also unclear whether a statewide bill will move, or whether the county will appeal.

Why it matters

Chatham County already paused new data-center permits and is in court over a Moncure-area project. Today's scheduled Pittsboro session is a call for a statewide pause, not a new county vote. People who want the official rule, or who plan to go, need the county page and the listed time and place.
