What this means for you

Roads
The organizer's chart lists 29 Sunday segments. Glenwood Avenue from Peace Street to Hillsborough Street is timed 3 a.m. to 1 p.m. Most other rows begin at 7 a.m. and reopen between 7:45 a.m. and 1 p.m. WRAL's Tuesday briefing page used a Saturday-afternoon start for that Glenwood Avenue block. The city's Closures and Detours page, read Saturday afternoon, did not list the race. This site is not the city or the organizer. Use the detours page before you drive.

What happened

In Raleigh, the City of Oaks Marathon posted a chart of 29 road segments for its Nov. 1 race that it says will close and reopen as runners pass.

The organizer's page times the start for 7 o'clock on Glenwood Avenue. It writes that most of those shutdowns fall between 7 and 9:45 a.m., and that the course is closed to traffic. A companion athlete guide for Nov. 1 lists the full and half marathons then, and the 5K and 10K at 7:20.

That chart lists Glenwood Avenue from Peace Street to Hillsborough Street from 3 a.m. to 1 p.m. The guide adds that streets near the start begin closing at 6:45 a.m., except Glenwood Avenue, Johnson Street, and North West Street, which it times before dawn. The published rows do not give Johnson Street or N. West Street their own lines.

CBS 17, writing Saturday afternoon, independently pointed readers to that website. It timed the Glenwood Avenue block around 3 Sunday morning and used the same 7:00 and 7:20 start clocks. The station's headline said "24+." Its homepage title said 28. The body said nearly 30. This file uses the 29 rows on the organizer's chart.

CBS 17 also placed the start near 400 Glenwood Avenue, at the Hibernian Irish Pub, and described a loop through downtown, along Hillsborough Street, and on a greenway north toward Lynn Road. Those three lines are the station's. They are not on the closure chart. The station wrote that about 1,000 people ran the 2025 marathon and about 3,000 registered for that year's half. The organizer pages we read do not print those 2025 figures.

WRAL, after a Tuesday city briefing, wrote that Glenwood Avenue would close from Hillsborough Street to Peace Street starting Saturday afternoon and stay shut until the race finished. Sunday's table begins that same stretch at 3 a.m. The two clocks are not the same.

A Saturday afternoon load of the city's construction-and-event closures board listed work alerts, including E. Lenoir Street through Nov. 6. It did not list the marathon.

The organizer page says police and course monitors will stand at each intersection, that Raleigh police will help with detours, and that cars may be helped across "when deemed safe by the officer in charge." CBS 17 repeated that last phrase and credited organizers.

This site is not the city or the race. For the written list, use the organizer's detours page. If anyone is in danger, call 911.

What we don't know yet

Whether the city will add the race to that municipal board before Sunday. Whether officers will move the 3 a.m. or 6:45 a.m. start-area times earlier. Exact reopen times on race day.

Why it matters

Sunday morning drivers need the organizer's written list, the 3 a.m. Glenwood Avenue row, and that CBS 17's 24-plus, 28, and nearly-30 lines are not the 29 rows on that chart. Tuesday's briefing pages used a different Glenwood Avenue clock.

Updates

  1. Oct 31, 2026, 2:12 PM

The organizer's public chart lists 29 Sunday segments, with Glenwood Avenue from 3 a.m. to 1 p.m. CBS 17 independently cited that website and wrote "nearly 30." The city's Closures and Detours page still omitted the race.
