What happened

In Wake County, deputies arrested a student in a classroom at East Wake Magnet High School in Wendell on Wednesday morning.

A district spokesperson, as reported by WRAL, said the campus went on hold around 10:20 a.m. while the sheriff's office made the arrest, and that the hold was lifted around 10:25 a.m.

CBS 17 quoted a family message that put the arrest just before 10:30 a.m. and thanked law enforcement and district security for responding.

A written Burlington Police Department release, with an Oct. 28 update, now sits on the Alamance County Crime Stoppers site.

That release said officers went at about 7:28 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, to the 900 block of Boston Drive, Alamance Crossing, after a reported shooting. Officers found an injured adult male who was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

The Wednesday update said a 16-year-old male was taken into custody in Wake County and charged with attempted murder; assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury; inciting a riot; and possession of a handgun by a minor. It said the incident arose from an altercation, and that the victim remains stable.

ABC45 printed those same clocks, that Boston Drive block, those four charge names, and the stable-condition line.

WRAL, citing the department earlier, had already used Boston Drive, attempted murder, inciting a riot, and the handgun-by-minor count. It used a shorter assault line and "serious injuries," and it did not print Alamance Crossing or the 7:28 p.m. clock.

CBS 17 first listed second-degree murder from warrants it said it reviewed. A later editor's note on that page said the North Carolina Court System later treated that line as a clerical error, and that Burlington police say the count is attempted murder.

ABC11 independently printed that same four-count list and wrote that the teen was denied bond and taken to the Wake County Detention Center. CBS 17 still lists a Thursday first appearance in Graham and no bond. The written release does not print those court lines. We have not opened the papers.

ABC11 also wrote that the student is from Zebulon, that the man was shot with a 9mm handgun, and that the victim went to Alamance Regional Medical Center. Those three lines are ABC11 only.

We are not naming the student. WRAL printed no name. The department release prints no name. A charge is an accusation, not a finding of guilt.

A FOX8 page carried the same WNCN report; that is not an independent outlet.

Timeline

  • Saturday, 7:28 p.m.: The department places officers at that Boston Drive block at Alamance Crossing.
  • Wednesday morning: The Wendell campus goes on hold. Deputies make the classroom arrest.
  • Wednesday: WRAL and CBS 17 publish. The department posts the custody update. ABC45 matches that written list. CBS 17 later posts the clerical-error note.
  • Overnight Thursday: ABC11 matches the four-count list and writes that bond was denied.

What we don't know yet

Thursday's first-appearance result. The 9mm, Zebulon, and hospital-name lines remain on ABC11 only.

What happens next

If CBS 17's court line holds, the next hearing is today in Graham. This file will be updated if those papers, or a later result, are posted.

Why it matters

Deputies arrested a student during class at a Wake County high school. Families need the written Burlington list, that CBS 17 has now aligned the top count with that list, and that a charge is not a conviction.
