What happened

In Fayetteville, CBS 17 reported Wednesday that demolition is under way at unfinished Fire Station No. 4 on Bragg Boulevard and that crews began tearing it down Wednesday morning.

The station said the work started two days after a Monday target, after officials said contractor Four Seasons Demolition of Wilmington kept pushing the schedule back and then confirmed a Wednesday start.

A municipal release dated Sept. 29 said City Council voted to negotiate with Samet Corporation as construction manager and that Cumming Group would oversee fall site preparation, including razing the partially finished building and clearing the lot. The same notice said Council accepted an Applied Building Sciences report recommending removal of the superstructure and foundation after construction stopped in 2024 over what officials called inadequate work by the prior contractor.

Both accounts put the Bragg Boulevard site as a replacement for the older Stamper Road station and said it is meant to serve about 5,000 nearby homes.

CBS 17 wrote that engineers found major problems with the walls, roof and foundation, and that officials chose a teardown and new contractor over repairs. The station put the original project near $11.5 million, about $7.6 million already spent, and about $3.8 million left plus bond premium for a replacement. It also wrote that Fayetteville and original contractor W.B. Brawley agreed to drop lawsuits and try mediation.
