What happened

In Cary, the Wake County Board of Education approved an addendum to Superintendent Robert Taylor's contract at its Wednesday night meeting, according to WRAL and The News & Observer.

The board's Nov. 4 agenda listed an action item titled "APPROVAL OF SUPERINTENDENT CONTRACT ADDENDUM." Both outlets independently reported a 7–1 vote to extend Taylor through June 30, 2030. They said board member Toshiba Rice cast the only no vote and that board member Chris Heagarty was absent.

The newspaper wrote that board chair Tyler Swanson said after the vote that Taylor asked that the extension not include a raise, pointing to tough budgets and teachers — especially veterans — who have not received the raises they deserve. WRAL separately wrote that the board commonly extends the superintendent's deal each fall after a performance evaluation, up to the four-year maximum under state law, and that Swanson said members could not discuss Taylor's evaluation under personnel-record rules.

The News & Observer dated Taylor's swearing-in to September 2023 after Catty Moore retired. WRAL independently placed the hire in 2023 after Moore's retirement. The district's leadership page lists Dr. Robert P. Taylor as superintendent.
