What this means for you

Schools
NC State's Fraternity and Sorority Life roster, checked Friday afternoon, still shows Sigma Nu on interim suspension pending further investigation, and also under Office of Student Conduct sanctions for a Code of Student Conduct finding that the roster does not describe. The current hazing reports are under review. They are not a confirmed hazing finding on the university's transparency report.
Public safety
Campus police have an open criminal case and, the school said Friday, served a warrant at the house. Officials have not named anyone or released a charging paper. Do not confront anyone you think is involved.

What happened

In Raleigh, North Carolina State University said Friday that campus police, with help from partner agencies, served a warrant at the Sigma Nu house in an open criminal case.

WRAL, ABC11, and The News & Observer each printed that school notice. The first two versions said the school would not add detail so as to protect the work, that it does not tolerate hazing, and that student safety comes first. The newspaper shortened the no-comment line to a spokesperson saying more might "jeopardize the integrity" of the probe.

No charging paper has been released. This file names no students.

On Thursday, Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman told WRAL she would anticipate some criminal counts and that the work was still early. She also told that station her office is in touch with campus police. Those remarks are missing from the ABC11 and newspaper pages.

ABC11's Friday dispatch said its crew saw officers and SBI agents at the house. The school's notice did not name the SBI. That bureau line is absent from WRAL and from the newspaper.

A national Sigma Nu statement, printed only by ABC11, said the group was founded against hazing, that the practice is barred by the fraternity, the university, and state law, and that it is cooperating on reports tied to the Beta Tau chapter.

WRAL wrote that Sky 5 showed unmarked cars blocking the street and at least four campus officers outside their vehicles. Those Sky 5 details are absent from the other accounts.

The newspaper put the house on Greek Village Drive, wrote that tape was around parts of the building, and called the chapter the university's oldest. Neither broadcast page used the street or that "oldest" line.

Its crime-log item is an anonymous Oct. 14 report that an "unspecified fraternity" was using date-rape drugs in hazing. That log line does not name Sigma Nu. We are not tying it to this chapter.

On Wednesday, ABC11 reported a sheet reading "Relax Pal" hanging on the house and later coming down. The newspaper credited that account to the station. Whether the sheet belongs to this inquiry is not known.

The university's Fraternity and Sorority Life roster, checked Friday afternoon, still lists Sigma Nu under the Interfraternity Council with both an interim-suspension mark and a sanctions mark. The public list of confirmed hazing findings still leaves the chapter off.

This site is not the university, campus police, or the district attorney. If anyone is in danger, call 911.

What we don't know yet

What the warrant sought. Whether anyone will be charged. Whether the chapter pause was already in place before this week.

Why it matters

Sigma Nu is a recognized Interfraternity Council chapter at NC State in Raleigh. Students, families, and neighbors need the school's own Friday notice, the split among the three newsrooms, and that a prosecutor's forecast is not a charge.
