What happened

In Raleigh, The News & Observer wrote Tuesday that a Wake County grand jury has indicted Jairo Josue Aguilera-Ramos, 32, on attempted murder charges after a July 31 pickup crash on Forest Oaks Drive.

That dispatch said the indictment came earlier in October. It also listed charges of assault on a female, hit and run, and misdemeanor crime of domestic violence. An indictment is an accusation. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

ABC11, writing the morning of the wreck, confirmed a pickup struck an apartment building around 3:15 a.m. in the 5600 block of that street, off Old Wake Forest Road. That page did not name a driver and did not report any court action.

ABC11 wrote that the apartment was occupied and that no one living there was hurt. The driver left before crews arrived, that station said, and a passenger went to a hospital with injuries described as not life-threatening. Tuesday's newspaper later credited ABC11 for those two lines.

Only ABC11's July page said the Raleigh Fire Department found the building structurally safe, that no residents were displaced, that a power line came down, and that Duke Energy responded.

Tuesday's story, citing search warrants it said were released last week, printed a much fuller account of what investigators alleged. Those warrants were not in front of us. According to that newspaper's reading, a passenger who had dated Aguilera-Ramos had injuries an officer wrote looked inconsistent with a wreck, including a broken jaw and other broken bones on the left side of her face. The paper wrote that she told investigators he beat her until she lost consciousness, that he had seen her dancing with another man at a nightclub about five minutes away, and that she later said she believed the crash was meant to hide those injuries.

The same warrant account, as the newspaper quoted it, said witnesses saw her get into the vehicle with him driving; that the truck left the road, hit a pole and a complex sign, then struck the building; that his phone placed an automatic 911 call and he said nothing was wrong before hanging up; that truck data showed the vehicle "was guided forward to impact" with the engine at 99 percent throttle; and that he left on foot.

The Tuesday dispatch wrote that he is of Wendell, was arrested in Durham on Aug. 3, and has been held without bail since then.

The Herald Sun posted the same article. That sister page is the same newsroom's work.

A Tuesday morning look at the city's police news list found no matching department release.

What we don't know yet

The newspaper did not give the exact indictment date, a case number, or a next court date. The warrants and the indictment themselves were not in the files we opened.

Why it matters

A Wake County grand jury has now charged a man in a July crash that put a pickup into a Raleigh apartment building. The indictment account comes from The News & Observer. The July crash facts come from ABC11. The warrant narrative is the newspaper's reading of documents we have not opened. A charge is not a conviction.
