What happened
In Sanford, the city says four of its first responders were honored last week as Hometown Heroes by the N.C. Automobile Dealers Association.
A notice posted Oct. 22 put the ceremony on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at the Fuquay-Varina location of John Hiester Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram. The Sanford Herald, writing Tuesday, independently used that date, that dealership, and that program.
The city list is police officers M. Hogan and P. Hanson, Fire Captain Clay Vaughan, and Fire Battalion Chief Lonnie Kiker. The Sanford store of that dealership nominated them, the notice said.
The Herald counted five Lee County honorees: two city officers, two firefighters, and a sheriff's sergeant. The city listed four employees and said Sgt. Wesley Holder of the Lee County Sheriff's Office also attended as a nominee from the region.
The city said Hogan and Hanson were nominated after an Aug. 15 house fire. According to that notice, Hogan went inside before firefighters, found an older resident unconscious, and Hanson helped bring the man out. The Herald also described Hogan reaching the fire first, going in, and finding the man unconscious.
Vaughan's honor, the city wrote, was for a June 5 crash while he was off duty from Sanford and working for Benhaven Emergency Services, including care for a child on the way to a hospital. Kiker, the same notice said, retired in July after 35 years. The Herald page we could read did not repeat those two accounts.
The newspaper quoted Sheriff Estes on Holder's work. Those remarks are from the Herald, not from the city notice.

Why it matters
Sanford and Lee County officers and firefighters were honored last week for work the city says included a house-fire rescue. Readers need the city's own list, the Herald's five-person count, and a clear split between those two accounts.
