What happened

In Wake County, a judge sentenced Michael Kenneth Bielinski on Friday, Oct. 31, after a Dec. 1, 2025, wreck on Countryview Lane near Yates Mill Pond Road, according to court files summarized by CBS 17 and The News & Observer.

Both newsrooms put the prison term at two years and three months, then three years of supervised probation.

CBS 17, writing Monday from those files, named the woman who died Anna Patricia Swenson. The Observer's Friday account called her Ann Swenson, 76, and said she had been walking a dog near her home.

The Monday file, citing the patrol warrant, wrote that she was walking west on the northbound shoulder when he, traveling west in a Toyota RAV4, lost control and struck her. She went to WakeMed in Raleigh in critical condition and died Dec. 12, that page said.

The Observer, citing a warrant and a medical examiner report, timed the call at about 4:30 p.m., wrote that the impact threw her about 75 feet, and said he was thought to have been going 35 mph in a 35 mph zone. Friday's Observer page also printed a 0.08 breath-test result.

The station's Monday file said a breath test showed impairment and did not print a number.

The plea

CBS 17 dated a July 29 guilty plea to felony death by vehicle and driving while impaired, and said the remaining counts were dismissed. The Observer said the same two counts were the July plea, without that calendar day.

The station listed a Dec. 15 indictment as felony death by motor vehicle, felony serious injury by vehicle, impaired driving, and failure to keep the lane. The newspaper's December 2025 charging story named the death, impairment, and lane-control counts and said an earlier injury-by-vehicle charge was replaced after she died. It did not list the serious-injury count.

What only the Observer adds

The newspaper's Friday file identified him as a 72-year-old Cary dentist. It named Superior Court Judge Jennifer Bedford and summarized her written findings, including a mostly clean driving record, cooperation, a 2013 reckless-driving plea in Cary, health issues, the loss of a child in 2020, restitution, and treatment.

Bedford's order, as the newspaper printed it, also requires continuous alcohol monitoring in the first year of supervision and bars a driver's license until probation ends.

CBS 17 did not name the judge. It said probation bars alcohol, illegal drugs unless a doctor prescribes them, and driving until a license is restored, and that he must complete programs and drug tests his officer sets.

What we don't know yet

We have not opened the written judgment or the warrant ourselves. The two newsrooms disagree on her first name, Anna or Ann, and the Observer's December 2025 file called him 71 and of Raleigh.

What happens next

He is to serve that sentence, then the probation the files describe. We will update this story if the court posts the judgment.
