What happened
In Pittsboro, the town has halted Google Fiber construction after more utility-line hits, according to a Monday municipal release.
That notice, dated Oct. 26, 2026, said a townwide pause went out that afternoon and covers work by the contractor Hyper Networks. Staff said the halt lasts through this week and until they meet company representatives on Monday, Nov. 2.
Chapelboro, writing Tuesday from the same account, independently reported the Monday afternoon timing and the Nov. 2 review.
WRAL also reported the order Tuesday. Its page said the pause stays in place until that Nov. 2 meeting and did not print the week-long line.
The town listed three new strikes. On Friday, Oct. 23, a gas line broke in the Chatham Forest subdivision, and crews were sent home for the remainder of that day. On Monday, Oct. 26, another gas line was struck in that neighborhood, and a water line broke on East Street.
Chapelboro used those same Friday and Monday dates. WRAL agreed on the Oct. 23 gas break, then wrote that the second gas break and the East Street water break came on Oct. 25. This file uses the town's Monday dates for those two hits.
The release said the latest incidents follow earlier compliance concerns, and that the town had already issued Corrective Action Notices and prior stop-work orders this month. They said they have told the company and Hyper Networks to investigate and give a plan for immediate safety improvements, and that those findings must be shared in a public setting.
A briefing open to residents is set for 7:30 a.m. Nov. 2 outside Town Hall at 287 East Street. Chapelboro reported the same time and place.
WRAL wrote that Pittsboro Town Council called safety, including underground utilities, the top priority. The town's own page used that safety line without naming the council.
The station said it asked Google Fiber for comment. The page we read had no company reply.
Residents with problems can call 919-542-4621 and ask for Development Services or Public Works.
This site is not the town. If anyone is in danger, call 911.
What we don't know yet
Officials have not said when work may restart, whether anyone was hurt, or what the investigation will find. They have not explained the date split with WRAL.

Why it matters
Fiber work is paused across Pittsboro after gas and water lines were hit. Neighbors need the town's own dates, that WRAL used a different date for two of the breaks, and how to reach staff before the Nov. 2 meeting.
