What happened

In Wake County, the Board of Commissioners approved a $6.6 million construction contract Monday for renovations at the county park on Lake Crabtree.

A county notice dated Nov. 2 said the package covers a new classroom building, accessible walkways, more parking, and repairs to buildings already on the grounds. CBS 17, posting Tuesday, printed the same dollar figure and the same set of upgrades.

Both accounts tied the money to the 2018 Parks, Greenways, Recreation and Open Space bond. They also wrote that the grounds date to 1988 as the county's first established park and have drawn more than 250,000 visitors in 2026.

Chair Don Mial, quoted on the county page and again by the station, said, "Since it opened in 1988, Lake Crabtree County Park has been a popular destination for Wake County residents for fishing, boating and much more. This project will help us protect and enhance that experience so the park can continue to serve our community for years to come."

Park manager Susan Jones, on both pages, said, "I hear every day how excited visitors are for these improvements. These updates will greatly improve accessibility, help us provide programming year-round and create new ways for people to enjoy a park they already love."

The two files put a 4,805-square-foot classroom building near the water, with room indoors for up to 86 people, a covered deck, restrooms, and storage. They also listed new roofs on the administration and maintenance buildings, a 724-square-foot restroom, a stormwater wetland next to the classroom building, public art, and more parking at the boat ramp.

Work is expected to start later this year and finish in December 2027. Some areas will be closed while crews are on site. The county sent people to wake.gov/parks/lakecrabtree for later notes.
